Gaining a BA from King's College in 1969 Adrian graduated MB BCh in 1972 after clinical studies at St. Bartholomew's Hospital London. He then pursued general medicine at Nottingham and obtained MRCP in 1974. Changing to Radiology he qualified FRCR in 1978. After spells in Paediatric Radiology (Great Ormond Street) and CT (St. Bartholomew's Hospital, London) he became Lecturer in Professor Sherwood's Department of Radiology in the University of Cambridge in 1979. His interests to date have mainly centred on developing Body Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging. He gained his MD with a thesis on Computed Tomography of the lumbar spine in 1988. He was elected a Fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge in 1986 where he was Director of Medical Studies until 1994.

From 1998-2002 he was Editor of Clinical Radiology, and he served as the Chairman of the Royal College of Radiologists' Guidelines Working Party 1993-1998. He has published extensively in Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and various aspects of effectiveness within Radiology. He has written and co-edited various books on CT, Anatomy and Diagnostic Radiology. He was elected FRCP in 1991, Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998 and FRCS in 2003. He finished a six year term as Clinical Director of Radiology at Addenbrooke's Hospital NHS Trust in 2002. He was also a member of the Partners Council of the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) 1999-2002. He was Warden of the Faculty of Clinical Radiology of the Royal College of Radiologists 2002-6 and MR Clinical Guardian to the Department of Health 2004-7. He has, in the last few years been awarded honorary Fellowship/Membership of Radiological Societies in Ireland, Sweden, Australia/New Zealand, Hungary and France. He was appointed Editor-in-Chief European Radiology in 2007.

Professor Dixon still supervises in Anatomy at the University and is an Honorary Consultant Radiologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge. He was Master of Peterhouse in Cambridge from 2008 to 2016.
