Research Associate, Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge

Arsalan Ghani is a Research Associate at the Institute for Manufacturing. He is working on policy implications, actor/coalition influences whilst investigating climate change impact on international supply chains, and redistributed manufacturing involving digital pharmaceutical supply chains.

Arsalan completed his doctorate at the University of Cambridge in 2016 on the topic ‘Exploring the relationship between international supply network configuration and policy: interventions, influences and capabilities’. The research involved investigations into industrial strategies, government policies and supply network capabilities. He explored actors and coalitions dynamics within the industrial system. His analysis on actors interplay leads to the development of mechanisms to devise policy interventions for sustainable and resilient supply chain designs and transformations. His research involves a combination of fieldwork, applying empirical as well as analytical methods, incorporating strategy, operations and policy theories.

Prior to studying in Cambridge, Arsalan Ghani was the Director of Technology, Productivity and Skill Development in a public sector advisory body linked with a federal industry ministry in Pakistan. He was responsible for policy interventions design, development and implementation. He advised government ministries on matters of technology, productivity, supply chains and sustainability. On the behalf of the Ministry, he worked with international organisations including UNDP, ILO, GIZ, JICA and DFID on implementing programmes in the country. His first working experience was in an operation management role in a textile manufacturing company before working in academia and research. He consulted government and industry on policy intervention design and supply chain development in manufacturing. Arsalan published his work in journals and presented at international conferences. He appeared several times on the BBC to express his views on healthcare, supply chains and security.

His interests are:

  • International supply chain design and transformation
  • Policy intervention design and implementation
  • Institutions, actors and coalitions interplay in a policy landscape
  • Proactive and reactive policy influences

Arsalan Ghani completed his Masters in Operations and Technology Management from Gent University Belgium and Bachelors in Textile Engineering from UET Lahore Pakistan.
