Professor of Digital Economy and Horizon Director, School of Computer Science, University of Nottingham

Professor Derek McAuley is Director of Horizon at the University of Nottingham. Horizon brings together researchers from a broad range of disciplines to investigate how digital technology can enhance the way we live, work, play and travel in the future.

Prior to his current role, Professor McAuley held a lectureship in the Computer Laboratory at the University of Cambridge before moving onto a chair in Department of Computer Science at the University of Glasgow. He returned to Cambridge to help found first the Cambridge Microsoft Research facility and then the Intel lablet. He has also driven two startups, XenSource (now Citrix) and Netronome.

His research interests include ubiquitous computing, computer architecture, networking, distributed systems and operating systems. He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and member of the UKCRC, a computing research expert panel of the IET and BCS.
