Professor Martin Bennett is the British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiovascular Sciences in the Department of Medicine at the University of Cambridge. He leads the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. His major research interests are the vascular biology of atherosclerosis, angioplasty and stent stenosis.

In particular, his work has identified the mechanisms by which human vascular smooth muscle cells undergo apoptosis in atherosclerosis and stent stenosis, and the consequences of smooth muscle cell apoptosis. Professor Bennett has published widely on these subjects, and is currently on the editorial board of Circulation Research, Heart and Biochemical Pharmacology, and Scientific Councils of American Heart Association and European Society for Cardiology. He is a founder member of the European Vascular Genomics network, a network of excellence funded by the EEC, and the European Vascular Biology Organisation. He was elected to the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2007.
