Professor Megan Vaughan is Professor of African History and Health at the Institute of Advanced Studies, University College London. Previously she was the Smuts Professor of Commonwealth History in the Faculty of History at the University of Cambridge. Her main research areas are the social, economic and cultural history of Africa, the history of medicine and psychiatry in Africa, slavery in the Indian Ocean, history and anthropology.

Before taking up her post in Cambridge Professor Vaughan studied African history at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and taught for some years in the University of Malawi and at the University of Oxford.
