Sam is based at the Centre for the Study of Existential Risk for the 2018-2019 academic year while completing his book manuscript and launching a new research programme. His book, tentatively titled Is This a Threat? draws out the ways that societies have come to see science and technology as objects of security concern in the past several centuries, how those ways of viewing science and technology are tied to specific ways of governing security concerns, and what that can tell us about the limits of our governance system. This historically informed contemporary analysis is driven through Sam’s training in Science and Technology Studies (STS), and forms the basis of his next project, which will explore novel approaches to governing security concerns in biology across the United States, the UK, and internationally.

Sam also holds appointments as an Assistant Research Professor in Tufts University’s Program on Science, Technology, and Society, and as a Research Affiliate at MIT’s Program on Emerging Technology.
