Dr Kirkman is Deputy Head of the Department for Education and Social Care at Anglia Ruskin University. He leads the MBA in Education leadership and Management. One of his areas of research is international education and ICT.

Until recently, he was leader for the professional studies course on the PGCE at the Faculty of Education at the University of Cambridge, as well as leading the music subject PGCE.
