Visiting Professor of Innovation, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge

Dr Sam Beale is a Visiting Professor of Innovation in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge. This post was created in 2012 to strengthen and extend the work of the Department’s strategic theme on “Inspiring Research through Industrial Collaboration”. Its objectives are: To raise the profile of innovation within the Department; to provide inspiration, mentoring and knowledge on the practice of innovation to students and academics; and to strengthen collaboration with industry.

Before taking up this position in May 2012 Dr Beale was Head of Technology Strategy at Rolls-Royce Group. This role included management of the company’s University Technology Centre network and support for the Chief Scientific Officer and for the Directors of Engineering & Technology, and Research & Technology. Sam worked at Rolls-Royce for almost 30 years holding a variety of positions in design and engineering.

Prior to joining Rolls-Royce Sam worked at March Engineering Ltd, the Formula 1 team famous for giving triple World Champion Niki Lauda his first F1 seat. Sam has a BSc and PhD from the University of Durham and an MBA from the Bristol Business School.
