Stephen Jolly is a member of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office as the University’s Director of External Affairs and Communications. His 25-year business career has spanned consumer advertising, lobbying and corporate communications, working with multinationals such as HSBC, Nomura, Regus and Clearstream. He was formerly an instructor on the Military Information Support Operations Course at the UK's Defence Intelligence & Security School, Chicksands (1997-2001). He is a former Vice-President and now Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (FCIPR).

In 2010 he was elected a Fellow in Communications Theory at the Judge Business School, Cambridge; where his research focuses on the analysis of practical and professional texts, including advertisements and military propaganda. His specialisms include textlinguistics, rhetorical analysis and narratology.

Prior to 2005, Stephen held Fellowships at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver and in the International Centre for Security Analysis, King's College, London. He is currently a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge.
