Dan Shah was appointed Director of Investment Strategy and System Insight at UKRI in May 2021. He and his team work across UKRI, with external stakeholders and the UK government creating high quality analysis. This is to enable UKRI to make better policy, strategy and funding decisions to maximise impact and advise on UKRI’s overall investment strategy and to lead on the Spending Review, fiscal events and allocations. They are working to better understand how research system design impacts on sustainability and the implications for the long-term vision for R&D in the UK. They deliver robust and well-evidenced advice to Executive chairs, the CEO and UKRI’s Board, enabling them to advise ministers on their biggest strategic investment choices around R&D. The team support every stage in UKRI’s activities, from our overarching strategy to the evaluation and use of data.

Dan has a wealth of experience supporting the research and innovation sector, with his most recent as Director of Research and Policy Insight at the British Council, where he set up a new function for the UK’s international culture and education organisation. His previous roles also include Director of the UKRI India office, working in the Higher Education sector at Universities UK International, with the Russel Group and within Research and Innovation Policy and Funding at the Department of Business, Innovation, and Skills, now BEIS.
