Dr Ivan Flechais is a lecturer in the Software Engineering Programme in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Oxford. Originally educated in France, Dr Flechais came to the UK to do his BSc and PhD in Computer Science at University College London, before taking up his current role. He has been researching computer security for nearly ten years. Given that secure systems are frequently exploited by subverting their users, his research involves how secure systems can be designed, implemented and tested to take human needs into account.

Dr Flechais' current research interests revolve around continuing to improve AEGIS (a design methodology AEGIS was developed as a means of fostering an approachable, cost-effective design rationale, aimed at supporting developers in making informed decisions about technical security and its usability) and gaining a better understanding of the socio-organisational factors of secure systems, particularly with a view to designing with these in mind. Dr Flechais is also involved with webinos: an EU funded project aiming to deliver a platform for web applications across mobile, PC, home media (TV) and in-car devices. Part of this work entails applying tools and techniques from Usability, Security and Requirements Engineering to ensure that users are accommodated in the design of the system.
