Jonathan Smith is a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Economics at the University of Cambridge. He is also a consultant at the European Central Bank. His research interests focus on banking, monetary policy and financial stability.

In particular, his research currently looks at how interest rates and the capital framework influence bank risk-taking and stability. He was recently awarded the 2015 Sir Alexander Cairncross prize for the most promising young economist from the Scottish Economic Society. Previously, he studied his Master’s at the University of Cambridge and his Bachelor’s at King’s College London, University of London.
