Mark is the chief executive of Environmental Standards Scotland. ESS is the new public body responsible for the oversight and scrutiny of environmental policy and legislation in Scotland following the UK’s exit from the European Union.

Mark has previously worked for Audit Scotland, the Scottish Parliament, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency and the Natural Environment Research Council.

He has an geography degree from the University of Cambridge, a PhD in geochemistry and climate change from the University of Bristol and an MBA from the University of Edinburgh. Since September 2023 Mark is also a Policy Fellow at the Centre for Science and Policy.
