Paul Green has been Director of Operations at the Veterinary Medicines Directorate - the UK government body that regulates veterinary medicines - since 2011, when he moved to the VMD from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. He joined Defra in 1992. Paul has had a number of roles across a range of policy areas, including agriculture, environment and rural policy; and has led a major business change programme. Paul has also worked on secondment to the Cabinet Office, the European Commission in Brussels and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Before joining Defra, he spent five years working in the food industry.

Paul’s responsibilities at the VMD include the regulatory functions of surveillance of veterinary residues in food; monitoring adverse drug reactions; surveillance of antibiotic resistance in veterinary and zoonotic pathogens; inspection of the veterinary medicines supply chain; enforcement; and the development and implementation of policy and legislation on veterinary medicines and antimicrobial resistance.
