MRC Career Development Award Fellow, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge

Flavia Mancini is an MRC Career Development Award fellow and head of a multidisciplinary research group, called the Nox Lab, at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge. Before starting her own group, she trained in cognitive neuroscience at the University of Milan, University College London and University of Cambridge. Her research aims to (1) understand how the brain learns from aversive events to maximise well-being; (2) determine whether/how dysfunctional learning leads to the development of chronic pain and emotional disorders; (3) develop interventions that improve how the brain learns from aversive events. These questions are being addressed using a mix of information engineering tools, behavioural experiments, online "brain" games, brain imaging and brain-machine interfaces in humans. This research is helping us figure out why some people develop chronic pain, fatigue, anxiety and depression.
