Lecturer in Criminology and Policing, Anglia Ruskin University

John is a criminologist whose research interests lie in terrorism, extremism, radicalisation, penology and specifically studying conditions that influence extremism in the prison system.

John joined the criminology team at ARU in 2022, following a 16-year career in the Prison Service. As a former Prison Prevent Lead, John has proven knowledge and experience in counterterrorism and operational management. John completed his MSc in Counterterrorism at The University of Central Lancashire and is currently undertaking his PhD on conditions that influence Islamist radicalisation in UK prisons.

John is currently working with colleagues at the Policing Institute for the Eastern Region (PIER), examining the shift from vocal extremism to terror offending in the UK. This research hopes to shed light on a major gap in the literature concerning the mismatch between pre-offending and offending population within terror and terror related offences.

John teaches on a variety of modules across the criminology programme, focusing mainly on areas of counterterrorism, penology, and the criminal justice system.
