A symposium to discuss the promotion of the increased use of systems thinking in UK academia and government and enlarging their international engagement.

Participants include leading UK scientists, engineers and decision makers in the fields of complex systems and assessments, as well as Lord Deben (Chair, Climate Change Committee), Dr. Jill Jaeger (Sustainable Europe Research Institute), and Professor Julia Slingo, OBE (Met Office Chief Scientist).

  • A government scientist will speak on the Global Challenges.
  • Professor Hall on the systems approach to their assessment.
  • Dr. Jaeger on the European dimension.
  • Professor Llewellyn Smith on international collaborations:
    The value to the UK in engaging in global assessments.

Followed by a case study and a panel discussion chaired by Lord Rees.

The meeting will also be addressed by Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat, the Director and CEO of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (www.iiasa.ac.at). IIASA is currently celebrating 40 years unique experience in conducting integrated assessments for governments, corporations and institutions around the world, including currently The World Bank, the EU, and the office of the Secretary General of the UN. IIASA has already featured three times in the UK national press this year, in The Guardian, The Independent and The Sunday Times, as well as Nature, Nature Climate Change and PNAS.

Refreshments and Registration opens at 14:00. The Symposium will be from 15:00–17:30 followed by a Reception.
