Managing climate risk

On February 16, US Secretary of State Clinton announced a new US policy on climate change. Professor Charles Kennel will consider the implication of the new policies and of climate change management more generally.

Despite great advances in our understanding of the climate risks we face, little progress is being made to avoid it. Reducing emissions of short-lived air pollutants and greenhouse gases can have a fast climate response and could give our societies time to wean themselves from fossil fuels.

Ultimately however, due to the already large accumulation of greenhouse gases, these measures will no longer be sufficient to prevent warming – and future generations will see about three times as much warming as has been seen to date. Therefore society must prepare to adapt.

This talk will propose a strategy for the next few decades – to mitigate short-term climate change and a new approach to support local and regional adaptation around the world.
