Science and Censorship

Date: 17:30- 21:00, 4th December 2012

Venue: TBC

Speakers:
Ron Fouchier will talk about his experiences with the attempted censorship of his H5N1 avian influenza research, the publication of which was initially blocked.
Evan Harris writes a science policy blog for the Guardian, was previously an MP for 13 years and the Liberal Democrat Shadow Science Minister.

When should science be censored? This is a big question which arises due to wide range of different circumstances, a number of which will be discussed in this talk. Dr Fouchier will talk about his experiences with the attempted censorship of his H5N1 avian influenza research, the publication of which was initially blocked by the US and Dutch authorities. As well as a scientist’s perspective we also hope to hear from an industry representative discussing the recently announced full disclosure of medical trials data, and consider the viewpoint of those working at the interface of science and government policy.

This event, sponsored by CSaP, has been organised by the Cambridge University Science and Policy Exchange (CUSPE).
