Acting Director General, Industrial Strategy, Science and Innovation at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy

Sam Lister was appointed acting Director General, Industrial Strategy, Science and Innovation at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) in April 2019. Prior to this he was Director for Industrial Strategy at BEIS.

The Director General is responsible for the following areas:

  • industrial strategy
  • business growth
  • international science and innovation
  • science and research
Lister, one of the longest serving Directors of Communications in government, was a journalist at The Times newspaper for more than a decade, becoming its health editor. He joined the Department of Health as its Director of Communications in 2011 and led the Government’s comms around the Ebola crisis as well as managing a raft of issues around the NHS, including contractual disputes with junior doctors. Lister joined BEIS, then a new department, in 2016 as Director of Communications with the task of delivering campaigns, such as the Living Wage and GREAT, to support the growth of UK businesses.
