Director General, Schools Group, Department for Education

Juliet Chua CB became Director General for Schools Group at the Department for Education in May 2023. The role is responsible for: academies and free schools; the teaching workforce; the curriculum; targeted support including the National Tutoring Programme; exams and general qualifications; school accountability and pupil wellbeing and safety.
Previously, she was Director General for Finance and Corporate Performance at the Department for International Development (2018 - 2023), and retained the role when DFID merged with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in September 2020. She was responsible for finance; overseas platform; people; estates and security; the Chief Information Officer; commercial; FCDO Services; audit; and protocol.
Prior to this, Juliet was Director of the Care and Transformation Directorate at the Department of Health and Social Care (from February 2017), and Director General for Education Standards at the Department for Education (from July 2016). Before working at DfE Juliet was on secondment as Assistant Chief Executive at the London Borough of Camden.
Juliet has been a civil servant since 2004 and has also worked at HM Treasury and the Prime Minister’s Delivery Unit.
