Shabbir is now a consultant at McKinsey & Co. Prior to this he was a Special Adviser to Liz Truss as Secretary of State for International Trade, Foreign Secretary, and then Prime Minister, in which roles he advised her across her policy portfolios. He has in particular worked on the economic impacts of trade agreements, and the efficacy of policy interventions to improve competitiveness and boost exports and investment. He previously worked as the Economic Adviser to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, specialising in public sector efficiency, emergent thinking on the role of the balance sheet for policymaking, and advising on the trade-offs inherent in the Spending Review. Shabbir also has extensive private sector experience. He worked in the Banking and Capital markets Assurance practice at PwC, before moving to the transaction services financial modelling team. Shabbir is a qualified chartered accountant (ACA) and a CFA charterholder.
