"Resilience and Sustainability: the part that scholarship can play in enhancing global security and stability"

Speaker: Dr Tristram Riley-Smith

Date: Monday 16th December, 1-2pm

Venue: Lord Ashcroft Building (LAB) 005, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge

Dr Tristram Riley-Smith is the External Champion to the Research Councils’ Global Uncertainties Programme. This position is based in the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge, where he spent 2012 as a Visiting Fellow on secondment from the Civil Service, exploring ways to improve engagement between the National Security community and the UK research base. Tristram has also been appointed as a Director of Research in Cambridge’s Department of Politics and International Studies to support this Champion’s role.

Tristram spent over 25 years working as a specialist in defence, security and infrastructure protection in Whitehall. He was posted as a Counsellor to the British Embassy in Washington DC in 2002, and in recent years has established and run a “Centre for Science, Knowledge & Innovation” with the aim of improving engagement between academia, industry and the National Security sector.

Tristram will summarise the challenges and opportunities relating to engagement between academic researchers and Government departments responsible for national security and resilience. He will go on to describe the “Global Uncertainties Programme”, with its focus on anthropogenic threats to security and stability: as the Programme’s Champion, Tristram’s mission is to help researchers deliver impact through engagement with Government, Industry and Civil Society. He will provide examples of where research can make a difference, while recognising there are obstacles to overcome before significant impact can be made.

This talk is part of Anglia Ruskin's Global Sustainability Institute (GSI) Research Seminar Series.
