Piera Carugno is currently Head of Cross-Government R&D Strategy and Spend at the Government Office for Science. She leads a team that advises the Government Chief Scientific Advisor on making better use of public research infrastructure, supporting the scrutiny of science expenditure, and informing cross-cutting government R&D priorities. Piera’s professional career started at Rolls-Royce plc in Derby, where she spent more than 5 years as a Principal Aeroacoustics Engineer collaborating with partners from the US and Europe and looking after the technology roadmap to reduce fan broadband noise emissions. She then moved to McLaren Automotive, and in her role as Senior Aerothermal Engineer she led on several projects such as developing a machine learning tool to virtually simulate and validate aerothermal attributes and exploring how systems engineering thinking can be used to design supercars. Piera holds a BSc in Aerospace Engineering and an MSc in Aeronautical Engineering from “Sapienza – Universita’ di Roma”.
