Dame Sue Ion began her career at the BNFL as Chief technology officer from 1992-2006. During this time she was made a member of the Member of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council in 1994 and in 2002 became Vice-president and member of Council of the Royal Academy of Engineering, received an OBE for services to nuclear industry.

In 2004 she was appointed a Member of Board of Governors at Manchester University and a year later as a member of the Council of EPSRC. She began a visiting professorship at Imperial College in 2006 and in 2010 became Chair of EU Euratom Science and Technology Committee.

Before taking up her current role she was Vice President and Chair of the Engineering Policy Committee for the Royal Academy of Engineering. She is also Chair the Energy subgroup of the Academy's Engineering Policy Committee.

She received her OBE in 2010 for services to science and engineering.
