The Coalition Government is currently undertaking the most extensive reforms to the welfare state since William Beveridge published his seminal report 70 years ago.

In this, the Government takes its lead from Beveridge, whose guiding belief – that a “revolutionary moment in the world's history is a time for revolutions, not for patching" – is as true now as it was in the 1940s.

This lecture will set out the Government’s vision for radical change, reflecting on the challenges we face, and what we are doing to restore purpose and stability to the lives of people previously left behind.
