Professor of Environmental Economics and Public Policy, Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge
Andreas Kontoleon is Professor of Environmental Economics and Public Policy at the Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge. His research focuses on economics and conservation policy, including the economics of environmental regulation and policy, behavioural economics, and the evaluation of environmental policy using a selection of economic methods. Research themes include biodiversity conservation, climate change, food security, poverty alleviation, and public health. Recent research projects include assessing the efficacy of carbon offset programmes in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa and China, designing option based agri- environmental subsidy schemes, experimental work understanding pro-environmental preferences, and work evaluating the social impacts of protected areas in Europe. He is a co-founder and co-moderator of BIEOCON, the largest academic network for the economics and law of biodiversity conservation, and has published in multiple academic journals including, Science, PNAS, Nature Communication, Nature Energy, Nature Sustainability, the American Economic Review, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Experimental Economics, World Development, Ecological Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, Journal of Environmental Management, Conservation Letters.
Prof Kontoleon holds a PhD in Economics from the University College London, an MPhil in Economics from the University of Cambridge, and a BA in Economics and Philosophy (double degree) from the American College of Greece. He has advised a variety of governments and international organisations on conservation policy, including the governments of Sierra Leone and China, the British Government, OECD, the World Bank, and the RSPB.
