Bernard Hay is Head of Policy at the Creative Industries Policy and Evidence Centre, which is led by Newcastle University with the Royal Society of Arts and funded by the Art and Humanities Research Council, UKRI.
Previously, he was Head of Research and Practice at the Design Council, overseeing a portfolio of research, policy and engagement activities focused on championing the value of design and the role it can play in addressing climate and biodiversity loss. He has also been a researcher and education curator at the Design Museum, where he helped to establish the AHRC-funded Future Observatory programme: a £25 million pound UK-wide programme of design research and engagement focused on harnessing design to support the green transition. He has also been an Associate Lecturer in Design Theory and Social Innovation at University of the Arts London.
He is a member of the Creative Industries Trade and Investment Board, the Creative Industries Council’s working groups on AI and Sustainability, and a member of the North East Combined Authority’s Culture and Creative Portfolio Advisory Board.
Outside of work, he is also a trustee of Engage, the national charity promoting participation in the visual arts, and a Fellow of the RSA.
