Assistant Teaching Professor, Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), University of Cambridge
Dr Garfield Benjamin is an Assistant Teaching Professor at the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), where they co-lead the Master of Studies (MSt) in AI Ethics and Society. Their work focuses on the social issues created or exacerbated by technology—particularly artificial intelligence, data, surveillance, and related systems.
A key strength of their teaching and research is the opportunity to engage with a wide range of people. The academic team includes historians, philosophers, lawyers, and more, while students come from diverse sectors including industry, government, and the third sector. In addition to teaching, Dr Benjamin regularly collaborates with technologists, policy-makers, and researchers, offering insights into how AI and other technologies are shaping contemporary society.
Before joining ICE, Dr Benjamin was a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Solent University and previously worked at the Birmingham Centre for Cyber Security and Privacy. They earned their PhD from the University of Wolverhampton in 2014 as part of the Digital Technology Theory and Practice group.
With an academic background that spans multiple disciplines, Dr Benjamin is particularly interested in complex issues that defy simple categorisation and demand interdisciplinary approaches. This passion is reflected in their work at ICE, especially in the leadership of the MSt in AI Ethics and Society, which draws on a wide range of perspectives and fields of expertise.
