Head of Policy, Academy of Medical Sciences

Dr Guilia Cuccato is an academic and ex-civil servant. She trained in environmental science and genetics with a PhD in Risk Assessment of Genetically Modified Crops at Reading University. She specialised in engineering biology with two postdocs: respectively at the Telethon Institute for Genetics and Medicine in Naples (https://www.tigem.it/) and at the Institute for Molecular Oncology in Milan (https://www.ifom.eu).

Guilia was an editor at Nature and spent two years in Defra. She joined the Academy of Medical Sciences as head of Policy in May 2024 after eight years at the Government Office for Science where she focussed on improving science systems in government and promoting effective engagement between government and the academic base.
