Helen Bao is a Professor of Land Economy at the Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge, and a Fellow in Land Economy at Newnham College, University of Cambridge. Raised in Inner Mongolia in Northern China and trained as a statistician in Hong Kong, Professor Bao collaborates with economists at Cambridge University and colleagues in the Department of Land Economy.

Professor Bao believes in free, competitive markets but acknowledges that markets do not always function optimally or universally. As such, her research focuses on government policy and interventions that facilitate market operations and mitigate market failures, particularly in urban environments. Key areas of interest include sustainable urbanisation and housing affordability. Technically, Professor Bao specialises in the application of behavioural insights and hedonic price modelling in land and housing markets. Her latest book, Behavioural Science and Housing Decision Making: A Case Study Approach, advances the teaching and research frontier of behavioural urban studies.
