Dr Hugo Fleming is a postdoctoral researcher in the Mental Health Neuroscience group at the University of Cambridge, and a research associate at Peterhouse. In his research he is seeking to understand the biological causes of the substantial overlap between mental health conditions like depression, and metabolic diseases like type-2 diabetes. He is particularly interested in the ways that our cognition is shaped and constrained by the availability of energy.

At Cambridge, Hugo has also been instrumental in efforts to improve the public communication of neuroscience. He led the creation of a new multimedia platform, 'Notes on Science', aimed at giving a greater voice to early-career researchers interested in communicating their work, and hosts the 'Turning Points' podcast. He has given numerous public talks on his research.

Before Cambridge, Hugo studied Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford (where he won the prestigious Gibbs Prize for the best dissertation in the year), and then completed his PhD at UCL in 2022, researching mental effort and its role in depression (work for which he was awarded the Sully Prize).
