Dr Dalton is a Senior Lecturer in AI and Information Retrieval in the School of Computing Science at the University of Glasgow where he leads the Glasgow Representation and Information Learning Lab (GRILL).

His research interests focus on the intersection of natural language understanding and information seeking systems with a focus on Conversational AI. He studies methods for effectively creating and leveraging knowledge resources (such as Knowledge Graphs) for complex tasks. Application areas of interest include health and biomedical, travel and food, science and engineering, and history.

Previously, he worked at Google Research in the Machine Intelligence research group, where his work focused on relation extraction for knowledge graph completion, health knowledge discovery, and response ranking in the Google Assistant.

He was the lead organizer for the TREC Conversational Assistance Track (CAsT) and also helped organize the Complex Answer Retrieval track. He is the recipient of a UKRI Turing AI Acceleration Fellowship on Neural Conversational Assistants and received research awards from Google, Amazon, and Bloomberg. He is the faculty advisor for the 2021/2022 Alexa Prize Taskbot challenge team that won first prize. He holds multiple patents in retrieval, information extraction, and question answering.

Jeff received his PhD in 2014 from the University of Massachusetts Amherst at the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR), a leading international research group in search and natural language processing.
