Joe Martin is an Assistant Professor of the History of Science and Technology at the University of Durham. His research interests include the role of industrial patronage in post–World War II university research, complementing and contrasting existing accounts of the military-industrial-academic complex at institutions such as MIT, Stanford, and Caltech by examining institutions where industry and academia partnered in order to check government influence over basic research, especially in nuclear science.

Dr Martin was formerly a Teaching Associate in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge where his research focuses on the history of American physical sciences. His book Solid State Insurrection: How the Science of Substance Made American Physics Matter was published in 2018. His work has been published in a variety of journals including Physics Today, Science in Context, and American Journal of Physics.
