Rhodes is the author or editor of 42 books including, most recently, Comparing Cabinets (with D. Grube and P. Weller, Oxford University Press 2021). He has also published some 200 articles and chapters in books. He is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (UK). He also spent 25 years as editor of the prestigious journal Public Administration and has been a prominent contributor to a variety of issues in political science, including particularly methodology and the theory and practice of governance.

His research interests include; Public Administration, Public Policy, Comparative Politics, Ethnography and Governance.

In 2012, Professor Rhodes was awarded the International Research Association for Public Management and Routledge Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Public Management Research. In 2015 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR).
