Dr Ryan Williams is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland, Australia, and an Affiliated Researcher in the Centre of Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge. His PhD (Cambridge, 2012) involved evaluating the first research-based primary prevention program for violent extremism in the UK that was part of a project funded by the European Commission. From 2013 - 2019 he conducted two research projects on Muslims in prison and post-release (probation) settings, funded by the ESRC in the Prisons Reseach Centre at Cambridge, and in 2018 he was awarded the University of Cambridge Vice-Chancellor’s Impact Award for Public Engagement and Societal Impact for his research on inequalities in the English Criminal Justice System. His research continues to focus on issues of inclusion for minority-religious and ethnic communities in Muslim-minority countries, and he is currently completing a book based on his fieldwork with Muslims in the criminal justice system exploring the moral experience of prison and the state.
