Tom Livermore is head of science base and careers policy at the Academy of Medical Sciences where he leads their work on Brexit and the research base. His focus is on ensuring the best possible environment for medical research and obtaining the optimal outcome for medical research from the UK’s exit from the EU. His role requires close collaboration with the Academy’s Fellows, organisations from across the sector as well as with a number of Government departments.

Prior to joining the Academy, Tom completed a PhD in Biochemistry at UCL, studying how cells control their metabolism. Whilst at UCL he was a contributor to the Guardian’s Higher Education Network on issues such as scientific publication and career structures.
