Advice to researchers on engaging with NICE

CSaP has collaborated with the Bioscience Impact Team at the University of Cambridge to publish recommendations for researchers on engaging with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

These include consulting the Recommendations for Research published alongside NICE guidelines; organisations registering as a stakeholder to keep informed about guideline development; checking opportunities to join a committee; and commenting on consultations.

These recommendations came out of a policy engagement workshop chaired by Professor Mike Kelly and held in February 2024, which involved speakers from NICE as well as Health Innovation East and the Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) for the East of England.

As well as the specific recommendations for interacting with NICE, general suggestions for researchers seeking ways for their research to have impact included planning for impact from the start of any project and considering the health equity implications of research. For instance, researchers could plan to test for differential effectiveness of interventions across different population characteristics; and work with organisations with expertise on health equity. Researchers were urged to make the most of infrastructure at or connected to the University of Cambridge, including Health Innovation East, the ARC and CSaP, to develop plans for informing health policy and practice.
