Policy Innovation Fund 2024

In collaboration with Cambridge University’s Research Office, CSaP launched the Policy Innovation Fund in Easter Term 2024 — a new seed funding initiative aimed at fostering collaboration between academics and policy professionals.

The fund supports innovative projects that address pressing public policy challenges, with a focus on developing concepts that have the potential for significant policy impact. The inaugural round of funding, totaling £80,000, was made possible through Research England’s Policy Support Fund.

The selection process was overseen by a panel comprising academics, policy professionals, and representatives from the University Research Office. The first round attracted 26 applications from various departments across the University, from which eight proposals were selected for funding. The successful projects are as follows:

  1. “A Child Friendly Cambridge”- Flora Samuel (Department of Architecture)

  1. “Digital exclusion among temporary accommodation and social housing tenants”- Hannah Holmes (Department of Land Economy)

  1. “Behavioral Science to promote policy action for Climate Change”- Malte Dewies and Lisa-Maria Tanase (Cambridge Judge Business School)

  1. “Strengthening the capacity of fragile states to address global catastrophic risk”- Kennedy Mbeva (Centre for Study of Existential Risk)

  1. “Construction Performance Policy Fora”- Campbell Middleton and Ashan Senel (Department of Engineering)

  1. “Strengthening One Health Collaborations in the Dominican Republic: A Rabies Case Study”- James Wood and Charlotte Rendina (Department of Veterinary Medicine)

  1. “Integrating Palestinian Voices Within Updated Policy Security Frameworks”- Roberto Foa (Department of Politics and International Studies)

  1. “A pilot of exercises to synthesise insights to manage and mitigate escalating risks (SIMMER)”- Jessica Bland and Shahar Alvin (Centre for Study of Existential Risk)

Over the next nine months, CSaP will work closely with the successful applicants to support the development of their projects. The next round of the Policy Innovation Fund is expected to open in the Easter term of 2025.
