For over a century the Cambridge Universities Labour Club (CULC) has been campaigning in Cambridge on issues that matter to students: on EMA, the Living Wage, tuition fees and bursaries.
The Club works closely with the local CLP to fight for Labour in the local and national elections, making a real difference to the lives of students and residents. As the first university Labour Club in Britain to affiliate to the Co-Operative Party, CULC has also been active in ‘The Feeling’s Mutual’ and other campaigns.
Every term CULC organizes a huge range of activities for Cambridge’s lefties: speakers, debates, trips to parliament, socials, women’s events, LGBT events and many more. Most recently they have hosted Alan Johnson talking about higher education and the future of the Labour Party, Owen Jones on the alternative to austerity, Andy Burnham talking about student politics and NHS reform and David Miliband on the Living Wage.
CULC is proud of having a strong campaigning voice in Cambridge, both inside the universities and throughout the city. Campaigning is the primary means through which they put their values into action. Canvassing for elections is a great way to break the Cambridge bubble and to talk to local residents about real issues. All are welcome, and for anyone who has never canvassed before they offer regular workshops and always work in groups to ensure that everyone can be supported.
