Founded early in the twentieth century, the Cambridge University Conservative Association remains one of the largest and most active political societies in the University. The Association provides many opportunities to engage in some of the great history of debate and engagement maintained at Cambridge.
Society meetings provide wide-ranging opportunities to hear from the leading lights of Conservative politics and journalism. These meetings most often take the form of discussions, rather than lectures, giving everyone the chance to air their views and ask questions. Speaker meetings are always free and open to all members of the University, and recent guests have included Sir John Major, Andrew Lansley, Edward Garnier, Andrew Mitchell, Eric Pickles and many more.
Alongside these events, the Association provides a calendar of socials throughout the year. From Port and Cheese to Gin and Tonic, with punting and garden parties in May Week to boot, as well as a full Ball to celebrate the end of the academic year, members of CUCA need never look far for a relaxed and enjoyable evening away from their books! The highlight of each term is a splendid dinner, at which they celebrate the tenure of the outgoing chairman and welcome the incoming chairman.
CUCA strives to fulfil three goals:
1. To be a mouthpiece for Cambridge students’ views in the Conservative Party
2. To communicate the Conservative Party’s policies to students in Cambridge
3. To bring those interested in politics – be they of the Right or Left – together for political and social events
CUCA welcomes the diverse nature of Conservatism and is ready to engage with views across the political spectrum, so whether you are of a Conservative persuasion or are merely inquisitive and interested in political affairs, I look forward to welcoming you to our wonderful range of events.
