Dr Andrew J A Smith joined NPL 24 years ago following graduation from Loughborough University of Technology with a first class BSc Honours degree in Physics. He attained his PhD from UCL, London, on “Fast Waveform Metrology” in 1995, whilst working at NPL. Andrew played a leading role in the development of femtosecond photoconductive pulse generation and electro-optic sampling for metrology applications in the fast pulse and related communications areas and has worked on a variety of electromagnetic-related projects. He is a Chartered Physicist and co-authored over 25 conference and journal papers, contributed to IEEE Standards, and was awarded IEE’s Duddell Premium in 1993.

Andrew has been the Group Leader for the Electromagnetics Technologies Group for 9 years, and is responsible for a portfolio of research projects covering rf, microwave and terahertz measurement techniques, covering a wide range of different applications, from communications to healthcare, and from defence to sustainability.
