Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow in Epidemiology, MRC Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge

Having gained a first class degree in psychology and physiology, Kathryn worked as a research assistant at the Centre for Outcome Research Effectiveness, UCL, London. She then completed an MSc in Health Psychology and moved to Cambridge to take up a 1+3 Studentship at CEDAR. She gained an MPhil in Epidemiology and has commenced a PhD, with an enhanced stipend for advanced quantitative methods, in September 2010. She undertook a three month ESRC Internship with the Behavioural Insights Team, at the Cabinet Office, working within the Health Strand in 2011. She is currently also part of CEDAR’s Translational work group, taking a keen interest in making its academic work policy relevant.

Kathryn is currently looking at physical activity levels in preschool children using data from the Southampton Women’s Survey, a unique prospective cohort. Objectively measured physical activity was collected along with biological, social and psychological variables in a subsample of children (and their mothers) at age four. Using this data, objective levels of physical activity will be described and the association between maternal and child physical activity will be investigated. A paper assessing maternal awareness of physical activity levels in their children and correlates of this overestimation is also in preparation. In addition, Kathryn also provides teaching at both the University of Cambridge, and Anglia Ruskin University (ARU). At Cambridge, she supervises undergraduate medical students on the Social Context of Health and Illness (SCHI) course and teaches MPhil Epidemiology and Public Health students. At ARU, she is a course lecturer/co-ordinator for ‘Health Promotion and Consultation’, a third year option
