Professor of Education, Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge
Jan Vermunt is Professor of Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge, and is Chair of the Faculty's Psychology and Education Academic Group. He was previously Professor of Teaching and Teacher Education at Utrecht University, and has held multiple senior academic positions including Dean of the IVLOS Institute of Education, and Chair of the Department of Education, both at Utrecht University. He was also a Member of the Executive Committee of the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction between 2009 and 2013, and a Member of the Management Team of the Interuniversity Centre for Educational Research ICO from 2011 to 2012.
Jan's research includes the impact of teacher professional development on student learning outcomes, how a student's learning environment affects the quality of their learning, and how teachers incorporate their personal experiences, and experiences of colleagues, in to theory of teaching practise. He is currently working on several research projects, including a HEFCE-funded project on the "Measurement of learning gains in higher education across disciplines" (in collaboration with Anna Vignoles and Sonia Ilie), and a CUHP-funded project on "Evaluation of the Chief Residents’ Leadership and Management Programme in Medicine" (in collaboration with Riikka Hofmann).
Jan holds a PhD in student learning in higher education, and an MSc in Psychology and Education, both from Tilburg University. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of the journal Learning and Instruction, and a member of the Editorial Board of Educational Research Review.
