John is a former Deputy Director for International Policy and Partnerships, Financial Services Group, HM Treasury. John joined the Treasury in 2003 as a Government Economic Service economist and has subsequently done a number of international economic policy jobs in the Treasury, the Cabinet Office (European Secretariat), No. 10, and the Foreign Office.
John has worked on bilateral economic relationships and multilateral negotiations involving the EU and the G7/20. He was part of the Treasury team that responded to the Global Financial Crisis by designing bank resolution interventions as well as wider resolution policy.
Latterly, John has mainly worked on trade policy, having been part of the No. 10 UK-EU FTA negotiation team, focusing on the services and digital negotiations. He returned to the Treasury in early 2021 to lead one of the two international teams in the Financial Services Group.
