Lead Researcher in Industrial Energy and Material Sustainability, Centre for Industrial Sustainability, Institute for Manufacturing, University of Cambridge
Saul is a researcher at the University of Cambridge studying Industrial Sustainability in the manufacturing and construction sectors. He holds positions in the Centre for Industrial Sustainability in the Institute for Manufacturing, and also in the Laing O’Rourke Centre for Construction Engineering and Technology in the Civil Engineering division.
By training he is a physicist specialising in energy materials and molecular semiconductors for high efficiency lighting, but in recent years his research has shifted to focus on delivering greater impact more rapidly within industry.
He focuses on supporting large companies and governments around the world to identify and deploy “zero threshold” improvements which are already possible without relying on new materials, technology, software, or skills. He has deployed projects in Kenya, Italy, and the UK, in the agri-food, garment, and construction sectors, and he has visited other sits and lectured in Sweden, Portugal, Austria, Canada, and France.
Alongside his research with industry, he advises UKRI on their 2050 Materials and Manufacturing Vision, has also advised the UK Government on forecasting conflict between Net Zero and Circularity roadmaps, and has a keen interest in sustainable business models and value creation.
Beyond his research roles at the University of Cambridge, he works directly with Industry and government via IfM Engage, Cambridge University Technical Services, the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, and is the director of Cavendish Sustainability Limited.
