Dr Sean Butler is Director of Studies in Law at St Edmund's College, Cambridge. He is a qualified solicitor, and has worked in private practice and for Royal Dutch Shell in the UK specialising in intellectual property, particularly in life sciences.

His field of research is technology transfer, in particular academic-industry collaborations, spin-outs and patent licensing. He has carried out research projects for the BBSRC, the Finnish government, and the European Commission. He has co-written the book "Discovering the Law", intended for those thinking of studying law at university.

His role at NIAB is to develop strategies to investigate and exploit emerging business opportunities, as well as having an overview of legal/IP issues.

Dr Butler studied Law at the University of Oxford (St Edmund Hall) and the LSE, as well as Genetics at Cambridge (CPGS) before taking his PhD in social science at Imperial College, London.
