He was previously Director of Analysis, Strategy and Performance at UK Research and Innovation. Prior to that, he was Deputy Director, Research and Innovation Reform at BEIS, and before that he was Head of Higher Education, Science and Innovation at the Treasury.

Prior to this, Alex spent three years working in HMT’s strategic project centre. In this time, he covered a range of topics, including minimum pricing for alcohol, living standards strategy and the design of markets in public service delivery. He also worked for the Boston Consulting Group, where his projects spanned welfare, immigration, as well as investment banking, healthcare, energy, and the third sector.

Alex holds a Masters and PhD in Physics (with a focus on organic solar cells) from the University of Cambridge.
