Dr Doug Wilson is the Chief Scientist and leads the scientific and evidence Directorate in the Environment Agency. His role covers scientific research, innovation for environmental monitoring, evaluating interventions and assessing the state of the environment. Doug is the business lead for SAGE (Scientific Advisory Group in Emergencies) providing important information and scientific advice to the Government during incidents. He recently spent 5 months assigned to the Government Office for Science supporting the Covid 19 response.

Before joining the Environment Agency in 1999 he worked in the water industry for Southern Water and Thames Water, planning and managing water resources. Doug has a degree in human Ecology and PhD in river pollution incident modelling, with research interests in pollution dispersion, environmental water needs and the application of the precautionary principle in environmental management. He is an Honorary Professor at Nottingham Trent University.
