Professor of Control Engineering, Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge
Dr Jan Maciejowski is Head of the Information Engineering Division, and a member of the Control Group. His research focuses on Model Predictive Control (MPC); which is the use of online optimisation in real time to control systems. Current applications of this research include paper-making, spacecraft, air-traffic management, surface mining, fault-tolerant control.
His research within fault-tolerant control looks at how existing control systems cope with faults, such as those occurring in aircraft or chemical process plants, and how the system can be modified to handle these faults. This research is concerned with how this can be done automatically, and when it can be done successfully; and is aimed at handling unanticipated failure modes, for which solutions have not been pre-programmed. The outcome of this research aims to increase safety of operation of aircraft, vehicles and industrial installation.
His other research interests include
- Control of autonomous systems
- Model predictive control
- System identification
Dr Maciejowski is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and the Institute of Measurement and Control (InstMC). He is also the President and a Fellow of Pembroke College, Cambridge.
